Introduction

The RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) system is an evolution of traditional GPS that allows a receiver’s position to be determined with an accuracy of just a few centimeters. This is achieved through the use of real-time correction data sent from a base station. Today, this technology is gaining prominence in areas such as precision agriculture, drones, and autonomous vehicles.

RTK is a positioning and navigation system used to enhance the accuracy of a GNSS receiver through the use of a fixed base station and a mobile unit, also called a rover. The base station calculates errors in the satellite signals caused by atmospheric and other factors, and transmits the corrections to the rover in real time.

This makes it possible to achieve centimeter-level positioning accuracy, which is crucial for applications that require precise data, such as precision agriculture, autonomous machinery guidance, high-resolution surveying, drone control, mobile robotics, and autonomous vehicle navigation.

Locosys, a leader in RTK technology

Together with our partner Locosys, we present the RTK-1612AD-DR module, which stands out for integrating a dual-frequency GNSS solution that delivers high RTK precision. With multi-constellation support, it is compatible not only with GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BEIDOU, and QZSS, but also features inertial sensors to provide position estimation and maintain accuracy even when the satellite signal is interrupted.

The RTK-1612AD-DR is designed for low-latency applications, with native support for correction protocols (RTCM) and multiple communication interfaces. It provides accuracy and robustness at a lower cost and complexity compared to industrial receivers. With the RTK-1612AD-DR, high precision can be achieved without the need for expensive equipment or complex fixed installations.

The RTK-1612AD-DR module features a compact form factor of 16×12.2×2.4 mm and communicates easily via the UART protocol. It has an SMD design and includes a dedicated pin for antenna connection. Image 1 shows an example of a typical circuit for its integration.

There are two operating modes available when in use:

  • Autonomous mode, which provides an accuracy of 1.5 m CEP (circular error probable).
  • RTK mode, which provides an accuracy of 1 cm + 1 ppm CEP in horizontal position and 1.5 cm + 1 ppm CEP in vertical position.

Regarding frequencies, it is possible to work with:

  • GPS/QZSS: L1 C/A, L5C
  • GLONASS: L1OF
  • GALILEO: E1, E5a
  • BEIDOU: B1I, B2a

It supports up to 135 channels and has an update rate of 1 Hz.

To quickly test the module and evaluate all its capabilities, it comes with an evaluation board and the software ‘GNSS_Firebird,’ which allows users to obtain the current position, acquire and analyze positioning log data, monitor satellite signal reception status, and switch between autonomous and RTK modes.

In Image 3, the three main formats of GNSS positioning information are shown using the ‘GNSS_Firebird’ application. On the left is a bar graph displaying the signal reception status, at the top right is the GNSS data table, and at the bottom left is a circular chart showing the satellite signal reception status.

The RTK-1612AD-DR module is presented as a perfect option for the ongoing development of intelligent transportation technologies and autonomous driving. The demand for high-precision RTK positioning is expected to grow significantly in the near future. For example, in the autonomous vehicle industry, positioning technology has become a crucial element for achieving vehicle intelligence.

Locosys’ high-precision solutions, which combine accurate heading with integrated inertial navigation, effectively overcome the limitations of traditional satellite positioning in environments with weak or no signal, providing stable and continuous navigation services.
